Parent of adult children: What role to play after they reach the age of majority? - Ross Campbell & Gary Chapman
Faced with the harshness and complexity of the modern world, young adults are increasingly slow to gain independence. They remain in their parents' home until old age or return after a few unfortunate attempts at self-reliance. Parents, who in their youth emancipated themselves as quickly as possible, often feel confused. They thought they could enjoy a new freedom for their children when they came of age. In this parent/young adult relationship, Chapman and Campbell draw the boundaries between love and addiction. They stress the need, for the balance of the adult child, not to linger in the family home.
Publisher Overview
Faced with the harshness and complexity of the modern world, young adults are increasingly slow to gain independence. They remain in their parents' home until old age or return after a few unfortunate attempts at self-reliance. Parents, who in their youth emancipated themselves as quickly as possible, often feel confused. They thought they could enjoy a new freedom for their children when they came of age. They are required to support their offspring morally and financially for a few more years.
Even more difficult, some raise their grandchildren when young parents fail to take on this role. In this parent/young adult relationship, Chapman and Campbell draw the boundaries between love and addiction. They stress the need, for the balance of the adult child, not to linger in the family home. Filled with concrete examples, this book provides parents with the keys to reorganize their family life so that they no longer treat young adults as children. It also gives advice to empower these young people and help them start or relaunch in life. Finally, it paves the way for new, rich and mutually respectful exchanges.
